Over the last couple hundred years, the human footprint on our environment has grown exponentially and had devastating consequences on the other species we share this planet with. Indigenous ways of existing in reciprocity with nature have been replaced with colonialist and capitalist ideologies that treat wildlife as just another extractive resource.
As bird-enthusiasts, we can play a crucial role at the intersection of experiencing birds up-close, and advocating for their conservation. But the thrill of stacking up a sizeable life list, or capturing that perfect owl photo can interfere with our ability to exist in interdependence with nature. Even the most ethical birders may not always realize when they cross the threshold between harmlessly observing a bird and unintentionally causing it stress.
Join us in conversation with Faraaz Abdool (he/him)— a wildlife photographer, poet, writer, and environmental advocate— who interacts with nature at a reverential pace, and prioritizes fostering connections with the individual birds and habitats that he captures in his photos. From him, we’ll learn to tread with care and kindness when we enter wild spaces, and rethink how we’ll preserve the biodiversity that we’ve borrowed from future generations.
