Richmond - Observing Herons at the Pipeline

A sketch of a Great Blue Heron surrounded by grasses with a blurred background of blue, grays, and greens. To the left side of the photo reads " Join FBC RVA on May 7th and 10:30am observing herons at the pipeline.

Join us Sunday, May 7th @ 10:30am to observe Great Blue Herons along the pipeline!

Bring your coffee, bring your binos, & come hang out.  As usual, we will have extra binoculars to share!

American shad, a type of anadromous fish, are making their way up the James River to spawn which means plenty of food for the herons.

Please meet at Park14th - 325 S. 14th St - by 10:30am. Parking is FREE there on the weekends. We will cross 14th St. as a group, walk the short grassy trail to the ladder, and then walk along the pipe to post up one of the beaches or rocks to watch for herons and other birds. If you don't want to cross 14th street, the pipeline can also be accessed from Brown's Island.

We will be out there for ~1-1.5hrs so feel free to come and go as you please. If folks are feeling it, we may walk back along the canal to check out the vulture mural on the flood wall.

Accessibility Info: This is a short walk but does require climbing down a small, three rung ladder. If you choose to bird from the beach or rocks rather than the pipe, you will need to be able to duck under a railing or step down off the pipe. There is a portapotty near the parking lot and one up on Brown's Island. There are no places to sit beyond rocks and sand. The width of the railing along the pipe is about 3ft.
