The FBC Seattle community has been invited to a unique architectural tour on the UW Seattle campus - and it's all for the birds!
Judy Bowes, a PhD student in Architecture, and research assistant Anya Gavrylko, are working on a project that monitors bird collisions with buildings on UW Seattle's campus. The project explores which buildings or design elements on campus are the biggest threat for bird collisions, and will also help identify trends in the Pacific Northwest regarding bird vulnerability to window collisions, which species/ types of species are most vulnerable, what migration patterns are at the most risk, and other factors.
Anya and Judy will lead us on this tour, during which we can all learn about the issue of bird/window collisions, and also provide Anya and Judy feedback to inform future tours for architects and the broader UW community. Through their research and community education, Judy and Anya aim to identify solutions to reduce bird/window collisions for campus and beyond.
Please note: The UW campus and nearby areas are likely to be very crowded with cherry blossom viewers. We highly recommend trying to arrive at campus by any alternate means other than driving.
Location: University of Washington Seattle campus, PACCAR Hall. The hall is near the intersection of Memorial Way Northeast and E Stevens Way NE. We’ll meet on the concrete steps at the front of PACCAR Hall, which face NE Klickitat Lane.
Transit: King County Metro Bus serves multiple lines with stops on 15th Ave E or NE 45th Street, .2 miles from meeting point. The University District Light Rail station is .3 miles from the meeting location.
Parking: Click for UW Self-serve parking locations and rates
*Bonus: After the tour with Anya and Judy, we will have an optional extension to bird together through campus and along the waterfront of Portage Bay. This extension will involve an additional 2-3 miles of walking or rolling, and end between 1:30-2:00 p.m.
