NYC - Black Birders Week Bird Tours and BBQ

  • Participants will be guided to observe birds throughout the diverse habitats of Randall's Island Park while traveling along a choice of two birding routes. Both routes are mostly flat and paved trails with some open grassy areas and occasional shade cover- please note that one route option will experience more hilled and rugged terrain. There are a few benches along the route and restrooms located near the start and end of the trip. Total distance would be about 1 - 1.5 miles from beginning to end dependent upon your route choice. Registration is required and BIPOC community members are highly encouraged to attend.

  • Both routes will be end at a Community Barbeque at the 103rd Street Footbridge Picnic Area celebrating Black Briders Week- for more information click here.

  • *Binoculars will be available on a first come first served basis and will not be available to people who arrive later than the scheduled start.

  • Note on Accessibility:

  • The Scheduled meeting location is most accessible by the M35 bus. Free parking is also available near parking lots A, B, C and D at Ichan Stadium. There is also a Citi Bike rack located near the start. For more information on the park and how to get there, you can visit the Randall's Island Park Alliance website. Restrooms are also located near the start and end of the scheduled routes.

  • Join Randall’s Island Park Alliance, Feminist Bird Club, and NYC Audubon in celebrating #BlackBirdersWeek.

  • Help us celebrate and amplify Black Birders and Black Joy by joining our Community BBQ! Our songs, stories, and voices will sing out like the birds in the trees and skies above. Food will be available to purchase, but bring your own BBQ treats as well! The New Amsterdam Music Association will be present and complementing the sounds of nature with live jazz music in the Park. This event will also be joined by Bobby Horvath and live birds of prey from Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation. Bring a blanket to lay out on the grass and join the celebration! Tables are limited: elders and those with physical needs will have priority.

  • This event follows a Birding Tour lead by Akilah Lewis of Feminist Bird Club and Efua Peterson of NYC Audubon happening from 11:00AM to 12:30PM. Registration is required and can be done here.
