Madison - Waterfowl Watchin' at Lewis Park with the Feminist Bird Club

  • 5012 Highland Drive McFarland, WI, 53558 United States (map)

Our popular waterfowl ID event is back! Join us on Saturday, March 4th from 1pm to 3pm as we scope for migrating waterfowl from a viewing platform at Lewis Park, an accessible park along the edge of Lower Mud Lake.

To register, please visit the corresponding EventBrite page

This is a stationary, accessible outing with lots of opportunities to get all your weird duck ID questions answered. We'll share strategies for IDing waterfowl from a distance with binoculars and will have scopes on hand to practice with. We will mostly be standing on the wooden viewing platform, adjacent yard, and near picnic tables that overlook the lake. Dress in plenty of warm layers, and feel free to bring a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate. There is a heated shelter you can warm up in, as well as a heated restroom on site.

If you have a scope, please bring it! We will have a few scopes set up to share. We will provide waterfowl cheat sheets and extra identification guides as well.

Note: Timing the arrival of open water and waterfowl can be tricky - early March was great last year but we may reschedule this event if needed. If this happens, we will notify everyone via email.

Everyone is welcome at our events, no birding experience required!

Please RSVP so we can make sure our trip leaders can accommodate everyone.

Directions and Parking: We'll meet the viewing platform at Lewis Park at 5012 Highland Dr. in McFarland. There is a paved parking lot with free parking and one handicap space. Additional free parking is available along the street leading to the park or nearby residential streets. The viewing platform is a short walk down the path from the parking lot, directly south of the shelter.

Accessibility information: This is a stationary event with minimal walking. From the parking lot to the platform is approximately 200 yards on a paved trail. The trail is flat, but it could be icy or snow-covered. Accessible parking is available. There is a heated, accessible restroom on site. There are several picnic tables for sitting and a heated indoor area with more tables (and windows) for indoor viewing. Please contact us directly (see email below) if you have questions about whether or not this event can accommodate any accessibility needs.

Binoculars are available upon request. You will have the option to indicate if you need a pair before you checkout.

In the event of inclement weather we will cancel and notify you via email.
